Another point of view from social economical perspective. Abolishing the death penalty will show mercy to a segment of convicted people, but do injustice to society. A lighter sentence, such as life imprisonment, for heinous crimes could put undue strain on our state and public resources in the long term.

Date: 14 Mar 2013
Country: NZ-against

The oil-rich kingdom follows a strict implementation of Islamic law, or Shariah, under which people convicted of murder, rape or armed robbery can be executed, usually by sword.
Saudi Arabia has executed 23 people so far this year, including the seven men on Wednesday. Last year it executed 76 people and in 2011, 79.
Also, several people were reported crucified in Saudi Arabia last year. Human rights groups have condemned crucifixions, including cases in which people were beheaded and then crucified. In 2009, Amnesty International condemned such executions as "the ultimate form of cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment."

  1. Hi Christina I think your argument on Capital punishment is quite controversial, given that in my opinion I would actually support Capital punishment towards child molester's and repeat offenders. I actually think given their sick nature, they don't contribute anything to society except inlficlt hurt and harm to innocent children and effected citizen's. So I would whole heartedly support the death penalty, for child molester's, globally. That's my personal opinion.
In terms of the legal systems in other countries, it's quite hard to oppose this social issue given that some institution's are determined either by religion, like you stated with Saudi Arabia. With Saudia Arabia it's understandable that this govermental institution would have support for capital punishment; being a secular country, religous persecution is engrained in their culture and society. I support in this stance.
However when it come's to those countries such as the U.S, China and Singapore where their is support, it's quite hard to justify this action. The support for Capital Punishment is basically a reflection on their constitution and ideologies of the citizens. I wouldn't agree with that stance because their are some who may oppose this, hence the argument wether to support this social issue. Put simply, these countries should vote on wether the system work's for them so that the use of capital punishment in their country is on par with their personal ideologies. That's just my opinion, in this particular case.

  2. Hi Christina, I think that this is a very attentive topic. It is very profound in that it make you really think with a lot more carefulness. I like the imagery you use in the beginning. The idea of seeing it as back and white either or. I think however that this is much deeper than that and your research is very informative. You put a lot of thought into the subject and your argument is quite apparent, which is good.

I see where you are coming from in saying that you believe that capital punishment, such a the death penalty, should be used. I do agree that criminals such as rapists, murders etc deserve to be punishment harshly. However I think that the death penalty is wrong. I think it comes down to people religion, morals and values. I too would love to say kill those who have killed many and hurt many but I do not believe that it is morally right. I do believe that they deserve an extremely harsh punishment but death is it. Through killing them you are doing the exact crime they committed and as the clique saying goes 'two wrongs don't make a right', wether they deserved it or not! Although the death penalty may scare many offenders, you would be completely contradicting yourself! Which is very hypocritical.

There are other harsh things that can take place things like torture and life in prison which will keep these people of the streets and give them time to think about the crimes that they have committed!

This is a very controversial and thought provoking topic and I think many people based on their up bringing and morals will have different opinions, but at the end of the day I think everyone agrees that the punishment for these crime should be more severe.

    Well Done Christine!

Check mine out ad comment! Lets discuss hehe, I'd love to here your opinion on my topic! http://leighssocio-political.blogspot.co.nz

  3. completely agree on the idea of showing no mercy to the offenders. without this death penalty people are free to do what they please with the worst being life in prison, sometimes less. some may have to suffer more than they deserve in order for people to see that crimes should not be committed.

  4. I enjoyed reading this, and agree to some extent. However, in my opinion the death penalty almost seems like the easy way out. They may get what they 'deserve' in the opinion of a family who is suffering the lost of a loved one, but if you want the offender to feel the way he's made you feel then suffering in prison is probably the closest you are going to get. If you kill someone they might feel a few seconds of pain if you're lucky and it's not as if they are going to be aware that they're dead and suffer in their dead-ness. If I ever came face to face with somebody who'd murdered somebody I loved I don't think I would kill them - there's something about the death penalty that has these 'feel-what-we-feel' undertones, so I think simply killing them would be somewhat anti-climatic, as dark and twisted as that sounds. It would satisfy me a lot more, not to know that the offender was dead, but to know he was hungry and tired and sick in prison all day every day until they die. That being said, you make very good points and very convincing arguments - the fact that 'life' in prison barely ever means life in prison is something that I've always noticed and something that's never been fully explained to me; a 'life' sentence is only something like 25 years max. or something, but yeah very interesting read, and some really convincing points. good stuff :)

  5. You make some good points. However I am all for the death penalty when the crime committed is horrendous, such as rape -like you say continuously raping a young child, that is just not on. I do see how people can think it is just as bad, however it brings justice for the victims and families of the victims. I do also feel that sometimes the punishments to some of these people should be about equal to what they had done to their victims, they need to know what they put other people through. I feel that a life sentence isn't always the way to go about things (as it really isn't a full life), a murderer isn't going to get he right punishment just sitting in a prison where he gets feed three meals a day, a roof over his head etc. I would want to know that these horrible monstrous people where rotting for what they had done. I have to agree with Max on this one.
